Waterford Township Police Shooting – Suspect Dies Following Pursuit and Armed Confrontation

Authorities in Waterford Township are continuing to investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night following a police pursuit involving Michigan State Police troopers and local officers. Recent updates released within the last several hours provide additional details surrounding the deadly incident.

According to Michigan State Police and Waterford Township police, the incident began around 9:35 p.m. Thursday when troopers attempted to stop a silver Kia driven by a 60-year-old man. Authorities said the suspect fled, leading officers on a pursuit through multiple communities before entering Waterford Township.

Police stated that the pursuit ended in a residential subdivision near Turrillium Lane and Williams Lake Road after the suspect crashed the vehicle into a tree near Deer Path Trail and Rookery Boulevard. The vehicle reportedly came to rest in a marshy area.

Investigators said officers approached the crashed vehicle and repeatedly ordered the suspect to show his hands. Authorities allege the man refused commands and then raised a handgun while still seated inside the vehicle. Police stated that officers feared for their safety after the suspect pointed the weapon toward them, prompting officers to open fire.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet publicly released his name, though reports identified him as a 60-year-old man from Madison Heights or Highland Township. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.

Residents in the neighborhood described hearing a large police response and multiple gunshots shortly after the pursuit entered the subdivision. Witnesses reported seeing officers surround the crashed vehicle before the shooting occurred.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit and Michigan State Police investigative teams are now handling separate reviews of the shooting. Officials confirmed that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings.

Authorities have not yet disclosed why the initial pursuit began, and investigators continue reviewing body camera footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence as part of the active investigation.
