Tustin Shooting Today: Woman Fatally Shot as Police Search for Gunman

TUSTIN, California — Police in Tustin are continuing an active homicide investigation after a woman was found fatally shot Thursday evening near the intersection of 17th Street and Yorba Street, prompting a major law enforcement response and a search for the suspected gunman.

According to authorities, officers responded shortly after 6 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area. When police arrived, they discovered a 42-year-old woman unresponsive near the roadway. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a man dressed in dark clothing fleeing the area after the shooting. Police said the suspect was reportedly seen leaving in a dark-colored older model sedan before officers arrived.

Authorities have not publicly released the official identity of the victim, although local reports identified her as Sandra Rodriguez, a mother returning home from a new job shortly before the shooting occurred.

The deadly incident triggered a large police presence throughout the neighborhood as investigators secured the scene, collected shell casings, and canvassed nearby homes and businesses for surveillance footage. Portions of the surrounding roadway remained restricted for several hours while detectives worked to reconstruct the timeline of events.

Investigators currently believe the shooting may have been an isolated incident, though authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive or confirmed whether the victim knew the suspect. No arrests had been announced as of the latest updates Friday.

Residents in the area described hearing multiple gunshots before seeing police vehicles flood the neighborhood. The shooting has renewed concerns about violent crime and public safety within parts of Orange County communities where deadly shootings remain relatively uncommon.

Tustin police are urging anyone who witnessed the shooting or who may possess surveillance or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact investigators as the homicide investigation remains ongoing.
