North Las Vegas School Shooting Scare – Armed Suspect Taken Into Custody on Legacy High Campus

Panic spread across part of North Las Vegas Thursday morning after an armed suspect ran onto the campus of Legacy High School during an active police pursuit, triggering lockdowns and a massive emergency response while students and staff sheltered inside classrooms.

According to the North Las Vegas Police Department, the incident began shortly before 11 a.m. when officers responded to reports of a suspicious man behaving erratically and allegedly concealing merchandise inside a business near North 5th Street.

Police said the man fled on foot when officers arrived and allegedly pointed a handgun at one of the responding officers before running toward the Legacy High School campus while classes were in session.

The situation escalated rapidly once the suspect entered school grounds. Investigators said at least one officer discharged a weapon during an encounter with the armed man, and police later confirmed there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers near the campus.

Students and faculty members were immediately placed under lockdown as officers secured the school and surrounding area. Nearby schools were also temporarily placed on lockdown out of precaution while heavily armed officers searched the campus and surrounding streets.

Police later stated the suspect was found suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and was taken into custody before being transported to UMC Trauma Center. Officials said he was last reported in stable condition.

Authorities emphasized that no students, officers, or members of the public were injured during the incident. Officers also recovered a handgun near the suspect after the confrontation ended.

Emotional scenes unfolded outside Legacy High School as parents gathered near the campus waiting for updates while students were gradually released following the lockdown. Videos shared by local media showed relieved families reuniting after more than an hour of uncertainty and fear.

Investigators continue working to determine the full sequence of events that led to the confrontation on campus. Police have not yet publicly released additional details regarding possible charges or the suspect’s identity, though reports indicate felony charges are expected.
