Waterford Township Police Shooting Update: 60-Year-Old Man Dies After Pursuit and Standoff

Authorities in Waterford Township continue investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday night following a police pursuit involving Michigan State Police troopers and local officers.

According to updated reports released within the last several hours, the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday near the area of Williams Lake and Elizabeth Lake roads.

Investigators said Michigan State Police troopers were pursuing a gray Kia driven by a 60-year-old man from Madison Heights through multiple communities before the chase entered Waterford Township. The pursuit reportedly ended in a neighborhood near Hess Hathaway Park and Turrillium Lane after the vehicle crashed into a tree and came to rest in a marshy area.

According to police, officers approached the crashed vehicle and repeatedly ordered the suspect to show his hands. Authorities allege the man failed to comply and instead raised a handgun while still seated inside the vehicle. Officers then opened fire.

A nearby resident told local media that officers repeatedly instructed the man to drop the weapon before gunshots were heard. The witness estimated hearing multiple shots fired within a matter of seconds.

Police said officers immediately rendered aid after the shooting, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No troopers or officers were injured during the incident.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and Michigan State Police Special Investigation Section are now handling the investigation into the shooting. Authorities have not yet publicly released the identity of the deceased man or clarified why the initial pursuit began.

Officials also confirmed that the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings during active investigations.

Residents in the subdivision described a heavy police presence throughout the night as investigators processed the scene and tow crews removed the damaged vehicle Friday morning
