Boston Shooting Today: Police Respond to Chaotic Gunfire Incident Near Memorial Drive

BOSTON, Massachusetts — Authorities launched a massive emergency response following a chaotic shooting incident near Memorial Drive in Cambridge that left multiple people seriously injured and sent drivers and pedestrians fleeing for safety near the Boston area earlier this week.

According to investigators, the violence unfolded shortly after 1 p.m. Monday along Memorial Drive near the Charles River, where officials say a gunman armed with what authorities described as an assault-style rifle opened fire at vehicles traveling through the busy corridor.

Officials identified the suspect as 46-year-old Tyler Brown of Boston. Authorities stated that Brown allegedly fired dozens of rounds at random vehicles, creating panic among motorists and triggering a large-scale law enforcement response involving Cambridge police, Massachusetts State Police, and emergency medical teams.

Two victims suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by gunfire while inside separate vehicles, according to prosecutors and investigators. Emergency crews transported the victims to nearby hospitals for treatment as officers worked to secure the area.

Witnesses described scenes of terror as gunfire erupted in broad daylight. Several drivers reportedly abandoned their vehicles and ran for cover while shots continued along the roadway. Some witnesses compared the chaos to an “active shooter situation” as police exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

Authorities said the suspect was eventually shot by a responding state trooper, with assistance from an armed civilian identified in reports as a Marine veteran who intervened during the incident. Brown survived and was taken into custody before being transported to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.

Investigators later revealed that police had been searching for Brown prior to the shooting after concerns were raised about his behavior. Reports indicate the suspect had a prior criminal history involving firearms offenses and previous encounters with law enforcement.

The shooting forced major road closures around Memorial Drive as investigators processed the scene, collected shell casings, and examined damaged vehicles struck by gunfire. Officials confirmed there was no continuing threat to the public after the suspect was taken into custody.

Authorities continue investigating the motive behind the shooting while prosecutors prepare multiple charges connected to the incident.
